Broken Hearted

“The LORD is close to the brokenhearted, saves those whose spirit is crushed.” – Psalms 34:19

One of the most common experiences that we all share is that of being broken hearted. There are many reasons why we may be broken hearted; the loss of a loved one, seeing someone we care about suffer, being lonely ourselves, and the list can go on-and-on.  The season of Lent is a great time to be broken hearted because we can join with the Father and our Blessed Mother as they are broken hearted over the Passion of the Son. Not only can we be united with the Father and Blessed Mother in their pain, but we can also be mindful that this pain is not the end of the story. Jesus followed the will of the Father and how joyful it must have been on Easter Sunday for the Father and the Blessed Mother to rejoice in His Resurrection. May we be able to embrace our brokenness when it occurs, knowing that we are not alone as God is present with us, and be certain that it is through the broken-heartedness of the Crucifixion that the joy of the Resurrection is possible.
