Day 1 – Repent

by gary-foote on March 5, 2014

“John the Baptist appeared in the desert proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.” – Mark 1:4

As we begin the journey of Lent I like to think about the “Joy of Repentance. “ It can be very easy and tempting to only connect repentance with a feeling of shame, but there is so much more to repentance.

When we repent, we acknowledge our shortcomings, the times where we didn’t follow the plan that God has set out before us, and are given the opportunity to say:

Here are my mistakes Lord, but I want more. I want more of you and less of me. I want to trade in my sinfulness for your grace. I want your friendship, your love, and your forgiveness more than I want the selfish things that I have chosen that have led me away from you. Lord, I am a work-in-progress and today I am declaring through my repentance that I am taking one joyful step away from my “old-self” and one step towards “my-new-self,” which is totally yours.

I pray that this time of Lent begins with a great joy in your heart rooted in the truth that our God wants to take you right where you are at and transform you over these next weeks into someone even greater.
