Lent Day 12 – List to Him

by gary-foote on March 16, 2014

While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud cast a shadow over them, then from the cloud came a voice that said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” When the disciples heard this, they fell prostrate and were very much afraid. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and do not be afraid.” And when the disciples raised their eyes, they saw no one else but Jesus alone. – Matthew 17:5-8

Who of us does not long to hear the words of the Father saying to us, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” We all have a desire to be affirmed by not only our earthly parents, but our Heavenly Father as well. While we might not always hear the words from our parents, who are imperfect as we are too, God the Father continually wants to say these words to us, but there’s a catch…. We need to be living our lives according to His will.

Many spend an entire lifetime trying to understand the will of God and dramatically overcomplicate things. In this very same scripture verse of affirmation from the Father to the Son, the Father reveals to us exactly what we must do to follow His will: Listen to him (Jesus). That’s it! All we must do is listen to Jesus.

Often times when we think about listening to Jesus we look far past the present into the future and can become a victim of analysis paralysis. What will life be like if I follow Jesus? Will I have to give up my friends? If I give up my friends, who will be my friends? My family isn’t really religious; if I start really listening to Jesus will they disown me? How do I live out listening to Jesus at school and work without coming across too pushy? Is Jesus going to make me become a missionary in a foreign country? What if I listen to Jesus and he tells me to be a priest or a nun? The questions can go on and on and on. Once again in God’s goodness He shows us exactly what needs to happen in our lives to follow Jesus: “Rise, and do not be afraid… And when the disciples raised their eyes, they saw no one else but Jesus alone.”

That’s it. To listen to Jesus we need to not be afraid, rise ourselves, and become so focused that all we see is Jesus alone. He will take care of everything else. As we continue this journey of Lent, what fear is holding you back from listening to Jesus? What false anxiety have you put into your expectations of what life will look like if you do listen to God and only God? Be bold. Rise up, do not be afraid, raise your eyes to see Jesus alone and allow our Heavenly Father to extend the words, “This is my beloved child, with whom I am well pleased” to you.
