Lent Day 16 – God’s Standards

by gary-foote on March 20, 2014

I, the LORD, alone probe the mind and test the heart, to reward everyone according to his ways, according to the merit of his deeds. – Jeremiah 17:10

You and I have been created to take pride in our accomplishments and always strive for more. There is joy, peace, and a sense of accomplishment when we are able to know that we did a job or made the right decision. Unfortunately, we often times turn to people and places for this acknowledgement rather than God. We allow them to set the standards of our lives. Ultimately, it is God who has created every opportunity for us to be successful in life. He alone can judge our actions without error and truly give us the affirmation that we both need and desire based on His standards.

The question that we must ask ourselves is: Where do I seek my affirmation? As we look at both the sacrifices and commitments to growth that we have made for our Lenten journey, do we seek out the approval of others for what we are doing, or do we allow God to work out some of the “rough parts” of our lives that need to be better conformed to Him? If we seek to please others rather than allowing God to transform our lives and recreate us this Lent, we may be going down the wrong path on our journey.

Today is a great day to take a moment and let God probe our mind and test our heart. How do our sacrifices and commitments to growth hold up next to what God is asking of us rather than what another person may or may not think or say? The season of Lent is about our walk with God, so we must spend time seeking His plans and letting go of others’ plans, including our own. What a great time to allow God to work miracles in our lives by coming to know God in a greater way and allowing Him deeper into our mind and heart.
