Lent Day 9 – No Help But You

by gary-foote on February 26, 2015

My Lord, our King, you alone are God. Help me, who am alone and have no help but you… Esther C:14

9.2-26

Where do you turn in times of trouble?
To a friend, spouse, child, book, or expert?
I sometimes struggle with turning to others before God.

This very week three years ago my wife and I anxiously awaited life-changing news.
Our middle child (who was two at the time) was very sick, and we all wondered if he was a victim to the “C” word.

Children aren’t supposed to have cancer.
No one should have cancer.

We are people of prayer, but I have to honestly say, I was grasping for anything to provide an answer.
My faith was shaken

I came to the realization that no matter what the doctors found out, it wouldn’t change our situation.
He either had cancer or he didn’t.

My wife and I tried to be support for one another. Yet no support that we could give each other would change our situation.
Family and friends tried to be support for us. But their loving support would not change our situation.
Even though there were so many people supporting us, no one could give us the help that we needed.

God patiently waited for us to become fully dependent upon Him;
To seek Him first and not as a last resort.
To accept His plan, His will, even if we didn’t understand it.
Because only He could change our situation
By bringing peace and certainty that His plan is better than ours.

The reality: I Have No Help But You

Praise God, our son did not have cancer. He had another blood disease that was treatable.
He has other health complications that have made life both challenging and much more worth living intentionally.

God continually reminds us that His ways our not our ways. We are to do the best with the gifts, talents, and abilities He has given us.
We need to live life to the fullest. But above all, we must be grounded to Him through prayer.

“Prayer enlarges the heart until it is capable of containing God’s gift of Himself.” – Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta
